Environmental Liability Coverage Types

8 coverage types every SME owner should understand.

Standard GL policies exclude most environmental liability. These products fill those gaps, explained in plain language.

CPL

Contractors Pollution Liability

Designed for contractors whose operations create pollution exposures at job sites — whether they cause a new condition or accidentally make an existing one worse.

Most standard general liability policies contain absolute pollution exclusions. If a contractor disturbs contaminated soil, releases a chemical, or causes a spill during operations, GL will not respond. CPL fills that gap specifically for work performed away from premises the contractor owns or occupies. Coverage can be written per-project or on an annual blanket basis, and can be extended to include transportation, off-site disposal, emergency response, and completed operations. Claims-made and occurrence forms are both available.

Key Insight

For contractors performing more than 40% environmental work, combining CPL with general liability under one policy eliminates the gaps that arise when the two are written separately. Writing them separately is a common and costly mistake.
